A recently renewed tempura restaurant

“Tenkamehachi” is a long-established restaurant that has been around since 1949.

As the popular restaurant is located at only few minutes from both Ryogoku station and Edo Tokyo Museum, it quickly fills up during lunch hours.

The recently renewed interior and exterior are very clean and modern looking.

The restaurant has a counter and several tables. It isn’t very big but can contain about twenty people.

Excellent lunch ten-don and tempura

The reason that there is always a waiting line even during lunch hours, is the reasonable ten-don for ¥920 and tempura for ¥970. This time, I ordered tempura.

Look at this! It comes with a bowl of rice, miso soup with shijimi clams, pickles and five pieces of tempura!!!

The savory sesame smell fills the air. This is the Edo style tempura.
I’m getting hungry!

The fresh tempura pieces made by the master chef are, the piping hot shrimp, sillago, a kakiage mixed tempura of small shrimps and squid, eggplant and kabocha pumpkin.

The shrimp is small but perfectly firm and plump. Excellent!

The rice is hot and really fluffy, like it was just made.

The red dashi stock shijimi miso soup is, incredibly delicious. It tastes like it could be served at a fancy restaurant!

Big pieces, even though it’s lunch

All the tempura but the shrimp were very big. I enjoyed the crispy batter. So delicious!

It’s really good value considering how little I paid.

The rich dipping soup for the tempura is of unchanging quality.

I am just a little bit disappointed that the restaurant is now completely modern looking. Of course it is nice and clean, but I still miss the old traditional style architecture.

But the taste is still the same. I am confident that, as long as it is in the hands of the master chef, the traditional taste will carry on.
