The most well-known restaurant in Akabane, Marumasu-ya is known for unagi (eels) and river fish.
It opens at 9am! It’s quite rare to find a restaurant that opens at 9 and serves eels!!
I sat in the counter-seat on the first floor. The second floor (zashiki style) was full already by the time I arrived.
I can never choose what to eat. They have carp sashimi, loach, and many more.
At the end, we decided to get sea squirt shiokara preserve.
I can never stop myself from getting sea squirt because it’s so rare!
The unique taste got me hooked.
and here comes Yanagawa!
The Yanagawa is seasoned just right! and the Burdock brings a nice flavor to it.
It goes well with Japanese sake.
Finally the long-awaited,
Tokujo-Unaju (broiled eel served over rice)!
It’s so big and it only costs ¥2500! No wonder the restaurant is always fully packed.
The sauce is not too sweet and it brings out the taste of the eel!
The rice is a little larger than other restaurants but the rice is soaked with the sauce and it’s so delicious.
Unaju came with kimosui (eel liver soup)
The restaurant closes at 21:30 so it is recommended that you go early and line-up. A lot of people come from afar!
If you are around Akabane and feel like eating eels, go to Marumasu-ya!
