Right in front of the JR Shibuya station, there lies the Shibuya Scramble Crossing.
It is a four-way intersection in which people cross from all sides all at once, and the sight of such extreme crowdedness is said to be something that is unique to Japan and can only be seen here at Shibuya.
It is also very popular among tourists from abroad and whether it is day or night, you can be sure that this intersection will be buzzing with people. Intimidated by such flood of people, it is said that some people can even hesitate to cross over.
Some of the manners you want to keep in mind when you are crossing the Scramble intersection is to be careful as to not to bump into anyone and also to make sure you finish crossing over before the light turns red again. Try and avoid people as much as you can!

Keep an eye out for the “Big Screen” of the Scramble Crossing

Walking out from the Shibuya station and on to the Scramble crossing, the first thing you see in front is the QFRONT building. The large electric billboards with its array of colorful images and videos are now considered one of Shibuya’s major landmarks. Right beside these buildings, there is also an entrance to the Shibuya Center-gai, which may be familiar to some as it makes an appearance in many of Japan’s TV dramas, movies, and comics.
Inside the QFRONT building is Starbucks and TSUTAYA, which is a major chain store in Japan for rentals and sales of music or video contents, comic books, and more.
If you are interested in Japanese magazines, books, or comic books, TSUTAYA might be a fun place to visit.

From as long as 20 years ago, SHIBUYA109 has stood at the forefront of fashion culture of the Japanese youths and is still very much popular among Japanese teens with its well-known nickname for the building, “Maru-kyu” (Taken from the last two digits of 109, which can be read as Maru-kyu in Japanese). The building has a selection of clothes, shoes, accessories, hats, underwear, and other general goods sold at a reasonable price, mainly targeting teenage girls. If you are into fashion, “Maru-kyu” is an absolute must-see!
