Inokashira Park is located at just five minutes on foot from Kichijoji station. The public park has been one of the central attractions of the area since 1917. Its beautiful cherry blossoms are listed among the “100 Best Cherry Blossoms of Japan”. In spring, the park is filled with locals and tourists, enjoying a picnic under the famous cherry trees. The park attracts many visitors in other seasons as well. In autumn, you can enjoy the changing colors of the trees and in the winter, you might be able to see migratory birds, preparing their travel to the south.
One of Inokashira Park’s major attractions is the 43,000 m2 pond.
The pond is full of families and couples enjoying a ride on a rowing boat or a swan boat.
Cross Kichijoji-dori Street, and you will find yourself at the Inokashira Park Zoo. Here, you can look at the different animals, and can even pet some of them. The mini amusement park next to it is a fun spot for children as well.
And don’t forget to stop by Ghibli Museum, Mitaka, located on the west of the pond.
There are a number of cafés inside the park. “Pepacafe FOREST” is one of them. I definitely recommend this Thai café if you enjoy Asian cuisine! At the various stands in the park, you can take out ice cream or oden, boiled vegetables and meat in a fish and seaweed broth.
If you are coming from Kichijoji station, you will find many places to grab something to eat on the way, including Starbucks, a crepe shop and a yakitori stand. Take out food from the shops and enjoy a picnic at the park!
At the “Inokashira Park Art Market” held on weekends and holidays, you can purchase handmade works of individual artists. The products include clothes, accessories and paintings. You will also find many street performers around the park, playing music or showing a magic trick!
