Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, as known as Shinjuku Tocho (新宿都庁), is not only one of Tokyo’s major landmark buildings, but also one of the most prominent skyscrapers in the Western Shinjuku area.
It is a famous tourist spot and its secret for its popularity lies in the observation room at the top of the building, which you can enjoy for free. Tokyo has a variety of buildings with observation decks, such as the Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo Tower, Ikebukuro Sunshine City, Roppongi Hills, but the Shinju Tocho is the only one that you can enjoy for free, AND also have an amazing view of this quality.
It also makes for a great place to stop by when you visit Shinjuku, which is famous for its selection of shopping and gourmet spots.

Two free observation rooms with a quality view

1

In order to head for the observation deck, there is a special elevator, which you can use.
The observation rooms are on the 45th floor and it is separated into two, the south observation room and the north observation room.
The views from these two observation rooms differ slightly, so it might be fun to compare the two views as well (The elevators for going up to the two rooms are separate).
Both observation rooms are 202 meters from the ground and allows for a 360 degrees of panoramic view.
If the weather is clear, you will be able to find the Tokyo Skytree or Tokyo Tower, and possibly even see beyond Tokyo, such as the Fuji mountain. You might be able to find tourist spots such as Roppongi Hills or Rainbow Bridge as well.

Open until 11PM – the night view

A great feature to the north observation room is that it is open until as late as 11PM!
The cafe space is also open until 11PM, which means you can enjoy light meals such as pasta and coffee, and even alcohol, up until that time.

On top of that, there is a souvenir shop in the observation room, where you can buy souvenirs that you can only get in Tokyo. If you are looking for souvenirs, head for the northern observation room! You can purchase Shinjuku Tocho original snacks and goods.

Why don’t you enjoy a relaxing evening at the Tocho with a romantic night view of Tokyo?

* You can also download a smartphone app that makes your experience of the panoramic view at the Tocho even more enjoyable. This app can downloaded from the Tocho homepage.
